The article describes an experiment on the absorption of light through a pile of sheets of Perspex or glass. The experiment, in itself simple to perform, lends itself to a rich conceptual analysis and introduces a discussion of some aspects of the scientific method and of the search for physical laws. After deriving a first empirical mathematical description, a theoretical discussion of growing complexity leads to an improved and more general relationship.
